Future Use of Former Ministry of Labor Building Under Consideration

Three Options Proposed for Redevelopment of the Landmark in Central Nicosia

Following the recent relocation of the Ministry of Labor to the Metropolitan building in central Nicosia, officials are seeking solutions for the former ministry building on Lord Byron Avenue. This property is owned by the Social Insurance Fund, and its future use is now in question.

The Minister of Labor has requested that plans be developed to make use of the old building. At the same time, the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) is advocating for its preservation, considering it an excellent example of modern architecture.

However, the task of repurposing the building is not straightforward, as it has significant structural issues and has surpassed its useful life (the building was constructed in the 1960s and designed by the father of the current Minister of Transport), and this is why the Ministry of Labor had to move to the Metropolitan building.

According to information from reliable sources, the primary goal is to retain some of the building's character while updating it to be a more modern structure. However, no final decision has been made yet.

Currently, there are three options on the table:

  1. Demolish the building and construct a new one.

  2. Retain and expand the existing building.

  3. Preserve certain elements of the façade and construct a new building.

Nonetheless, what has been made clear by sources is that the property will be utilized and other government services will move into the new or refurbished building.
